Twin bans on same-sex civil partnerships and opposite-sex civil partnerships

Peter Tatchell Foundation

Catholic Archbishops urge discrimination against gay couples

Opposition to gay marriage shows perverse moral priorities

Same-sex marriage does not detract from heterosexual marriage

London - 11 March 2012

"Given the many grave problems in the world - war, hunger, poverty and dictatorship - it is bizarre that the Catholic Archbishops have chosen to focus on blocking gay marriage. They have a perverse sense of moral priorities, said Peter Tatchell, national coordinator of the Equal Love campaign, which is seeking to overturn the twin bans on same-sex civil marriages and opposite-sex civil partnerships. Equal Love seeks equality for all.

http://petertatchellfoundation.org/campaigns/equal-love and http://equallove.org.uk/

Mr Tatchell was responding to a letter from Catholic Archbishops, Vincent Nichols and Peter Smith, which was read out in Catholic churches in England and Wales today, Sunday 11 March 2012. The letter opposes government plans to legalise same-sex civil marriages in register offices.

"The Archbishops are preaching a gospel of division and discrimination. They want the law to discriminate against gay couples. Discrimination is not a Christian value," added Mr Tatchell.

"If the church genuinely supports love and commitment, why do Catholic leaders oppose gay couples showing their love and commitment by getting married?

"Gay marriage is about love. By opposing marriage equality, the Archbishops are denigrating, demeaning and devaluing love between two people of the same sex.

"Opening up marriage to same-sex couples does not detract from heterosexual marriage.

"Given that the Archbishops support the institution of marriage, surely they should welcome

the fact that many lesbian and gay couples want to get married?

"Catholics are entitled to believe that same-sex marriages are wrong, but they are not entitled to demand that their opposition of gay marriages should be imposed on the rest of society and enforced by law.

"No one is proposing that religious bodies should be compelled to conduct gay marriages. The government's proposals concern gay civil marriages in register offices - not religious marriages in places of worship.

"The church has no legitimate reason to block same-sex civil marriage ceremonies. What happens in a register office is no business of the church. It is outside their jurisdiction," said Mr Tatchell.

NOTE:

The Equal Love campaign is seeking to overturn both the ban on same-sex civil marriages and the ban on opposite-sex civil partnerships. It seeks full marriage and partnership equality.

In February 2011, four gay couples and four heterosexual couples, sponsored by the Equal Love campaign, filed a historic joint appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). See here:

http://www.petertatchellfoundation.org/sites/files/Equal-Love-Application.pdf

"Our appeal argues that Britain's twin legal bans on same-sex civil marriages and opposite-sex civil partnerships amount to illegal discrimination, contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights. The bans violate Articles 8, 12 and 14 - respectively the right to privacy and family life, the right to marry and the right to non-discrimination," said Mr Tatchell.

Kids and teens need to see Bully.

Human Rights Campaign

Kids and teens need to seeBully.

A powerful new anti-bullying film has the potential to change lives, but by giving it an "R" rating, the MPAA will prevent most kids and teens from seeing it.

Tell the MPAA: Amend your ruling and give Bully a PG-13 rating.

Take Action

"For a bullied kid, school can be torment.

Daily taunts and physical abuse turn into feelings of hopelessness when teachers won't help.

School bullying has already made too many young lives painful and frightening. It's going to take a huge effort to put a stop to it – from schools, parents, politicians, and cultural icons.

That's why I am extremely disappointed that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has decided to give a new documentary about bullying an "R" rating, making it nearly impossible for most schools to screen the film or for kids and teens to see it on their own.

Our partners and allies have already delivered over 200,000 signatures asking the MPAA to amend their decision – and now it's up to us to keep the pressure on by flooding their inboxes.

Help us keep the momentum up with another 100,000 letters TODAY. Tell the MPAA: Amend your ruling and give Bully a PG-13 rating so that we can start putting an end to bullying.

Ratings are there to help parents and families make the best decisions about what their children should see, but in this case, the "R" rating does the opposite – keeping a huge part of the target audience away from the film.

What's more, Bully was only given an "R" rating due to profanity, and the MPAA has made exceptions for swearing in the past.

In fact, the MPAA gave a 2005 documentary about the military a PG-13 rating even though it had 36 more instances of the f-word than Bully simply because they thought it was important for young people to see the film.

Victoria, you and I agree: bullying is far more harmful to kids than a little coarse language, and over 200,000 of our friends and allies have already spoken out asking the MPAA to change the ruling. Will you send a letter now to keep the pressure on?

Tell the MPAA: Kids need to see this film. Reverse the decision to give Bully an "R" rating.

This documentary has the potential to change – or even save – lives. But we’ll never know its full impact if kids and teens are kept away.

With your help, we can make sure the MPAA does the right thing here. Thanks for standing up for our kids.

Sincerely,
Joe Solmonese

Love Needs No Cure

Tell MPs to sever ties with "gay cure" charity

Should MPs be accepting financial help from charities that sponsor "gay cure" conferences?

Phillip Dawson from Enfield thinks not -- so when he discovered that the Christian charity CARE, who sponsored a conference in April 2009 discussing"Therapeutic approaches to same-sex attraction" and"Mentoring the sexually broken" had funded interns for 17 MPs, including his own, he was shocked.

Phillip has started a petition on Change.org calling forall MPs to sever ties with CARE. Click here to join Phillip’s campaign.

Until two weeks ago David Lammy, MP for Tottenham, was receiving interns from CARE. But as a consequence of Phillip’s campaign, he stated that he will no longer accept interns from CARE. Now Phillip needs more people to join his campaign so that the 17 other MPs publicly distance themselves from the organisation.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists have said that talking about homosexuality as a disease “creates a setting in which prejudice and discrimination flourish". Phillip believes that MPs should be fighting homophobia wherever it occurs but by associating themselves with CARE they are actually helping to fuel it.

Phillip wants to make it clear that it’s no longer acceptable for homosexuality to be presented as a ‘disease’ - and elected figures must not accept financial support from organisations that promote such views.

Click here to join his campaign and tell the 17 MPs to sever ties with CARE.

Thanks for being part of this,

Warning - Homophobia triggers - Social Media Homophobia

URGENT: PLEASE READ

“Since we launched this video to protest Russia’s new gay censorship law 4 days ago, thousands of people have left horrendous, hateful comments like “Die all of you, faggots!” and “Fags should go in the oven”.

Thanks to you, the video is having a huge impact and going viral with over 200,000 views1, but right now a minority of violently extreme voices are drowning us out on the page.  The messages are so terrible that many Russian All Out members asked that we disable the comment feature - and for one day we did - but the All Out team just made the decision to open them back up and give you a chance to change the conversation.

It will take 30 seconds to log into YouTube (you can do it with your Gmail account), but it will really make a difference.  Journalists and Russian lawmakers who see this viral video think the supporters of hate are ruling the day.  Will you help us overwhelm the page with messages of equality from all around the world and share the emotional video with your friends and family:

Alberto, Andre, Erika, Flavia, Guillaume, Jasmin, Jeremy, Joseph, Oli, Tile and Wesley

PS - The Governor of St. Petersburg has still not signed the “gay gag rule” into law.  You said “don’t go there” and it’s working - keep up the pressure bywatching, commenting and spreading the word.

Uganda’s “Kill the Gays” bill has been re-introduced

      Sign the petition here

Citibank and Barclays wield significant influence in the country, but have so far been silent. Tell the two banks to speak up now and help stop the terrifying bill from becoming law

Barclays and Citibank could save the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Uganda.

The Ugandan legislature could vote any day on a so-called “Kill the Gays” bill that could result in legalising the death penalty for any LGBT person in the country. But Barclays and Citibank together have hundreds of millions of dollars invested in Uganda and wield significant influence in the country. If Barclays and Citibank speak out against the "Kill the Gays" bill, Ugandan legislators will take notice in a hurry.

Collin Burton is a Citibank customer -- he’s also gay.Collin started a petition on Change.org asking Citibank and Barclays to speak out against the "Kill the Gays" bill. Click here to sign Collin’s petition right now.

Barclays and Citibank are both big supporters of LGBT rights for their own employees -- just last week Barclays was named the most LGBT-friendly company in all of Scotland. Yet they invest money with a government that is threatening to execute LGBT people. "I expect Citibank and Barclays to live up to the values of equality and fairness, not just list them on their websites," Collin says.

If Citibank and Barclays speak out against the "Kill the Gays" bill, Ugandan legislators will see that they are risking the business relationships that keep their government afloat.

Click here to sign Collin’s petition asking Citibank and Barclays to issue strong statements condemning Uganda’s "Kill the Gays" bill. The bill could come up for a vote any day, so swift action is essential.

Thanks for being a change-maker,

- Brie and the Change.org team

Team Ivy!

Definitely loving Smash so far. I started watching because I heard that Katharine McPhee (Karen) was in it but Megan Hilty completely won me over as Ivy. She is the most interesting character in the show so far, and while the writers obviously want us to root for  Karen by making her the underdog who will overcome the more experienced veteran (Ivy) performer to become Marilyn in the show, she's nothing we haven't seen before, and her voice doesn't hold a candle to Ivy's when it comes to playing Marilyn.

This (click on the link below) was one of my favourite performances by Megan on the show, although she needs to go back to singing broadway. Karen is the pop singer and Megan is the broadway singer this seems to be obvious to everyone but the producers :(
